My vision improved -- is this an NSV?

I had an eye appointment yesterday and while my close-up or reading prescription has slightly worsened since my last exam a year and a half ago, my long distance vision has actually improved! I didn’t know that was even possible. He said it’s rare, but it can happen. In fact, my right eye, which is the weakest, had improved more than the left. He noted that I’d previously mentioned having an older brother with diabetes, and I said the fact that I’d been told I was pre-diabetic was a motivating factor in my weight loss to date. He said it’s quite possible that being pre-diabetic was already having some effect on my vision, so the improvement could be from having lost weight. Who knew!? Would that count as an NSV? I don’t know but I’ll happily take any health improvement at my age!

I am getting smaller ... and a great quote!

I'm so tired! I finished my run ... 28 minutes for the first time ... and I still can't believe I made it. My seasonal allergies are bad right now, and while I haven't taken anything for them I still felt more thirsty and tired during the run, but I made it. Wow! Two more times and I'll be in my final week.

A friend back home just ran a half marathon and I'm in awe. I didn't even know she ran! She shared this quote which I really love:
“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.” – Vince Lombardi
Isn't that the truth? I reminded myself of that when I felt like giving up tonight. My legs didn't want to quit, my head did ... and my lungs a bit. But now I've had dinner and I'm just relaxing ... it's not even 8pm yet and I could easily just fall asleep.

I mentioned yesterday being somewhat disappointed in what feels like a stall in my weight loss. It's not really, but it's been a slow month. Anyway I think despite the lack of results on the scale these last two weeks, I've gotten smaller ... I wore a pair of black jean shorts Saturday that I couldn't fit into a couple of weeks ago. That's an NSV and it tells me that no matter what the scale says, I'm moving in the right direction. It's all good.

Pants with a fly! NSV!

This may sound weird, but I have been wearing stretch pants for years. So to be able to wear pants with a fly is kind of a new experience. I mean, aside from the pair of jeans I got back into recently, it has been a long, long time! A few weeks ago I bought two pairs of slacks at a second hand store. One I could fit into but they were snug and not being used to a fly I was afraid to wear them. What if I sit down and the button pops off? The other was a size 16 and too tight to even try to button or zip them.

So today I thought I would try on the larger pair again and if they were loose enough I would have something new to wear to work. I pulled them out of the closet and put them on and they fit just fine. Then I realized they were the smaller size 16! Oh my god, they fit! I wore size 16 gray slacks with button and fly closure and it may sound weird but this feels like an NSV (non-scale victory). I felt normal today. Normal non-stretch pants. Such a little thing but it sure felt good.

My BMI is down over 10 points!

I noticed something yesterday. When I started this weight loss effort on 19th August 2013 weighing 130.3 kg (287.2 lb) my BMI was 49.3.  Today at 103.7 kg (228.6 lb) my BMI is 39.2. That's just over 10 points lower! Of course at nearly half way to goal, I shouldn't be surprised. But how cool is that?

Shopping day

Yep, I have been shopping with my sister-in-law as I was sick of wearing shorts that were too loose on me. I had one pair of jean shorts that I squeezed into somehow before I started Dr Poon's diet, but just barely. They were a size 22 while I was clearly a size 24 at least. So as I lost weight they became much more comfortable, then loose, then too loose. I had a pair of 3/4 length jeans in the closet a friend had given me, and they were a size 20. I tried those a few weeks back and they fit! I didn't like the length though, and rolled the cuffs so they came just below the knee.

So we were at the mall yesterday and stopped at My Size, a store we don't have by me. I found some shorts I liked and even a couple of tops my sister-in-law talked me into trying. The sales lady noted I had grabbed the size 20 shorts and suggested I take an 18 to try as well. I don't want them tight and uncomfortable, but at the same time, I am shrinking so I don't want them too loose in a couple of weeks. So I thought what the heck. I tried the 18 first, preparing to have to fight to get into them ... but they went on and even zipped fairly easily! Size 18! Seriously, a size that isn't in the 20s? Nice NSV! I can't even remember how long it's been. They were snug, there was no point trying a 16 yet, but they went on easily and fit comfortably. I did cringe at the $90 price tag but they looked good and made me feel good so I bought them. I liked one of the tops but they were also $90 each so I passed on those and went to Target where I found a cute new top to go with the shorts. Guess what? It's also an 18. Wow. But it was only $30 so I felt better getting that.

I didn't plan to spend on my wardrobe as I am changing sizes. I do have tops at home that I'll soon be fitting into, but not enough summer ones. But those shorts ... well I just had to get them. I don't generally like shopping as I don't particularly like today's fashions, most are rather ugly, and even if they're not they never look good on me. But that will change as I get smaller, right? Fingers crossed.

The day I've been waiting for has arrived!

Yes, it's finally happened ... someone who didn't know about my weight loss effort has noticed! One of the ladies who doesn't come into the office regularly came in today, leaned over my desk and quietly asked, "Have you lost like a massive amount of weight?" I smiled and said, "Over ten kilos." She said she'd done a double-take walking past my office as it was very noticeable, especially from the waist up. I thanked her for being the first to notice, aside from the few people who know what I'm doing. When someone knows you are losing weight you wonder if they really see a difference or are trying to be supportive and encouraging. But when it's out of the blue like that, it's really noticeable!

Happy dance time! Does this count as an NSV? I think so! :)

Week 6 weigh-in plus an NSV!

Six weeks in and here's the results:

So my lowest loss to date, yet I lost the same amount of fat that I did last week, just less water.  As long as I'm losing fat, I'm happy, but it would have been nice to get below 120kg.  In any case, my total to date is 10.3 kg (22.71 lb) which I think is pretty good in six weeks.

I did have a NSV or Non-Scale Victory this week which I was rather excited about. When we go tp get petrol hubby always fills the tank and I just reach down and pull the switch to open the fuel door.  For some time now I've had to undo my seat belt to reach it as I couldn't bend down far enough due to my size.  But not today!  Without thinking I just reached over and pulled it and suddenly I realized - I still have the seat belt on!  It's a silly little thing, but I instantly proclaimed it an NSV.  Why not!?  I'm quite happy with that.

Oh - and maybe this is another one. I've been meaning to increase my Walk Away The Pounds workouts from 2miles to 3miles, but so far haven't had the time or the energy. But Saturday I did it - got 3 miles in, so that will be the goal from here on.

There's another workout I've been interested in trying ... DDP Yoga. They have some amazing success stories here.  The first one, Arthur, has a video about his journey that I remember seeing awhile back - it really inspired me, so I'm thinking about trying these workouts.  Have any of you tried them, and if so, what did you think of them?
